I am excited to announce my newest television project, a one-hour special on the Syfy Channel, “My Big Fat Geek Wedding.” The show focuses on a one-of-a-kind couple, wishing to depart from the expected in order to be true to themselves, whilst as their planner and designer, I take on the challenge of making their vision come to life.
It is my constant goal to provide a new point of view for wedding design – something different that challenges traditions and expectations. In collaboration with our couples, we create an experience for them and their guests based on all the things that are special and relevant to them, exhibiting their unique point of view. And for this couple, we wanted nothing less.
“My Big Fat Geek Wedding” presents the wedding of Julian Roman and Mandie Bettencourt, geeks in love who met online while playing “Final Fantasy.” After an 8-year courtship, Julian popped the question onstage at a Renaissance fair, and now the couple is excited to create a wedding that is a true reflection of their relationship and shared passions.
On the show, I enlist some of my favorite wedding vendors and experts to help me bring their fantastical ideas to life. With the help of my team, we create their dream wedding, a “middle-earth” styled celebration, and take the couple on an unforgettable adventure as we scout possible castle venues, design elaborate thematic tablescapes, select authentic attire, and plan a surprise or two along the way!
I loved supporting two people who were so committed to telling their unique story through their wedding. Whether you are a fellow geek, a prom queen, or a hipster, who doesn’t want to see everyone have their perfect day? Together, we all embraced the opportunity to take on this unusual theme (one that could obviously have gone very wrong) in an effort to take it from geek to chic, making it approachable and stylish, yet still representing them in all of their quirkiness as self-proclaimed geeks in love.
Special thanks to our talented team of vendors who joined us on this journey: Archive Rentals, Classic Party Rentals, East Six, Alexandra Lee Nuthren Photography & Fantasy Frostings.
Be sure to tune into Syfy on March 11 at 10pm EST to catch “My Big Fat Geek Wedding!”
